Encaustic and Silver Jewelry

Kiss © Jill Waterbury

For me, inspiration is everywhere, nature, music, art, design, books, conversation and entirely unexpected places. (A random scribble on a post-it note in a business meeting spurned an entire series of paintings and drawings!) Ideas for my painting and jewelry can come from anywhere. My iPhone has become another piece of that puzzle. It allows me to record anything that inspires me at a moments notice so that I can remember and use it later. Technology and art, that’s where my worlds converge!

Ceramics

Traditional raku vase © Larry Shapers

Larry Shapers was introduced to ceramics in 1977 in Cleveland, Ohio. A friend had a small studio and Larry began working as an apprentice. Larry taught himself because his friend was never there. In 1978, Larry moved to Arizona where he took a ceramics class at N.A.U. in Flagstaff. After a semester there he went to the Hopi reservation to observe the pottery.

In 1979 Larry traveled to Israel and found a potter who was working in the art colony of Eni Hod and he worked there as an apprentice for a year. In 1981 he returned to Cleveland and worked for a ceramic company where he delivered clay to all the universities in northern Ohio. The next year Larry built his own studio in Cleveland and taught classes.

Larry moved to California in 1985 and worked in Los Osos as an apprentice for Bill Toller. During the next 25 years Larry went off the world of ceramics and now he very excited to be doing ceramics again.

Untitled © Virginia Mack

Virginia Mack is a native Californian. She has been exploring and savoring the wild lands of the state throughout her life. She has been living on the Central Coast for 10 years. She is a part-time instructor at both Allan Hancock College and Cuesta College in the fine arts departments.

Virginia, along with her late husband John, also an artist, has spent endless hours exploring the back roads of San Luis Obispo County seeking those bits of landscape that are visually stimulating. Virginia works primarily in watercolors and mixed media and is a colorist at heart. She builds most of her pieces in a wet-on-wet process (wet watercolor paints on wet watercolor paper) resolving the pieces as the paper slowly dries. She creates the forms with rich colors that she plays off against contrasting colors thereby subduing them while preserving their presence in layers of color. She often mixes the watercolor process with work using colored pencils, pastel, charcoal, and pencil.

Virginia received her education in fine arts at the University of California, Berkeley. She has taken additional classes at The California College of Arts and Crafts and in independent workshops.

Calligraphy & Watercolor Etchings

With Wings © Chuck & Sami Korientz

Recently married, we were looking to harmoniously join Chuck’s woodworking talents and my love of writing poetry, and so Seahorse Kreative Concepts was born!

We create personal, hand written pieces of poetry with a subtle watercolor enhancement. Recently published, I received extraordinary encouragement from my wonderful husband, so he and I have begun this unique and glorious journey to share our combined love of words, woodworking and watercolors for all to see and enjoy.

We look forward to expanding our imaginations, rising to the challenges, and enjoying the rewards of seeing smiles and even a few tears as you read one of our poems and it touches your heart.

At home or out and about, we are on a continuous quest to find inspiration. People, places, plants, antiques—all inspire. Camera close by, notebook constantly in hand, we never know what will spark that artistic bug. We are blessed to be able to express our feelings of joy in such a unique and personal venue.

Drawing & Painting

Killer © Cherri Blazek

Cherri was born in Mesa, Arizona and moved to San Diego’s North County at a very young age. She just recently moved to Atascadero, CA with her husband and two young sons.

Throughout her life, Cherri has been in love with all forms of art. She comes from a long line of master woodworkers, artists and silversmiths. Her grandmother and mother were artists and always took time to show Cherri little details that really made art stand out. One such lesson was how to make an apple “sit down,” as her grandmother always said. Cherri never forgot those little lessons.

Her desire is that all who view her art are able to see the real living personality through the eyes of each animal or human portrayed, as well as the beauty she perceives in creation around her that she infuses into each work of art.

Necklace © Eliot Diamond
Once upon a time there was a young boy who owned a box of crayons (you know the big box of Crayolas, with 48 different colors).

Unexplainably, the young boy took to drawing floor plans and elevations of houses instead of horses and cows. Unfortunately, he used the walls of the living room as his easel. His unhappy mom soon gave him paper and a #2 pencil and as fate would have it, the young boy eventually grew up to be an architect and a building contractor.

For many years he designed and built houses all over the west coast of the US and even in foreign countries. Life was good.

Then the lengthy bureaucracies of local governments replaced the thrill of designing and he looked for another medium to satisfy him imagination. Many art classes later he discovered the joy of making clay jewelry and what you see here today is the culmination of that creative process.

Tow Truck © Dorsey Dunton

Dorsey Dunton  was born in Oakland and raised in Fresno, California. He attended Fresno High School and married his childhood sweetheart, Sidney Tancredy. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean war. A restless soul, Dorsey has worn many hats during his life—he’s been an insurance adjustor, an undercover investigator, a contractor, a pilot, a prison instructor, a realtor and deputy for the governor of California.

Art in some form has threaded its way through each of these endeavors. Each piece of Dorsey’s work is unique. Signed and numbered, his “Wood on Wheels” collection is a piece or part of all the trucks that fascinated him as a boy. Dorsey designs and hand builds his art at home, where he cares for Sidney, his wife of over 60 years, who suffered a debilitating stroke 13 years ago. Being a restless soul that is now grounded, Dorsey’s energy is now evident in his vehicles of the road.

SLO City Sunset © Bill Rumbler

Bill Rumbler started out as a photographer and a reporter with a daily newspaper in Michigan in the 1960’s, but later tried to make a living by words alone, and largely succeeded. Photography was relegated to snapping pictures of kids and grandkids in the wading pool, and Aunt Tilly in front of Big
Ben. Then, in January 2013, Bill purchased a Nikon D7000 and ever since he’s been out shooting sunrises, sunsets, moonrises and moonsets, while trying to find unique locations from which to do so. He’s probably out shooting while you’re reading this.

As far as a philosophy of photography goes, well, it’s taken nearly 70 years for him to develop a philosophy of life, so who knows how long it’ll take to come up with a philosophy of image making.

Rick Carter has been interested in working with wood since his woodshop class in the 8th grade. He loves to see the beauty of the grain pop out as the wood is smoothed and finished. Since his retirement in 2010 he’s been able to work on his art several days a week.

He’s currently working on smaller items for the home that make thoughtful gifts. He’s using interesting hardwoods, including several species from Asia, Africa, and South America. All his woods are natural, with no stains or dyes. Rick can make larger items, such as butcher block tables, custom made to your specifications.

Mixed Media

Creation Story © Mari O’Brien

For 25 years I was an academic teaching French and English language and literature, comparative literature, and humanities—until I felt a calling to return to the art that inspired much of my youth.

My work is rendered mainly in acrylic, collage, and mixed media. I paint in a primarily intuitive, adventurous, and experimental way, resulting in abstract or non-representational pieces, using multiple layers and creating a rich, complex tapestry. Some folks describe me and my work as eccentric and eclectic, and I freely admit that I like these descriptors!

For me, a successful painting evokes an emotional response on the part of the viewer, even when no identifiable subject is depicted.

A Photoshop junkie of sorts, I often manipulate digital images of my paintings for use as collage materials, as well as for my silk scarf and note card designs.

I am blessed to be living this life in art!
